Welcome to Verona Public Schools One School, One Book Webpage!
What is One School, One Book?
We are very excited to present a new program at Brookdale Avenue School and F.N.Brown called One School, One Book. One School, One book is a program designed to create a singular reading experience within a school community. We will ALL be reading the SAME BOOK at the SAME TIME! How exciting!!
EVERY student, EVERY parent, EVERY teacher, and EVERY staff member will all be reading The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden. The Cricket in Times Square was a Newbery Honor Book in 1961, and is a timeless Children's Classic.
Chester Cricket never intended on leaving his tranquil home in the suburbs of Connecticut. But when he gets trapped in a picnic basket, he ends up in the brightest, livliest, and most exciting place on Earth....Times Square in the heart of New York City. There, Chester meets and befriends, Mario, a lonely boy trying to sell newspapers for the family business, Tucker, a mischievous street wise city mouse, and Tucker's friend, Harry the Cat. As Chester adjusts to city life, he realizes that he has a special hidden talent that will melt even the toughest New Yorker heart.
Boasting with vivid characters, and themes of friendship, The Cricket in Times Square is a heartwarming story that will be loved by our Kindergartners through our fourth graders, and parents will be charmed as they reminisce about a well-loved classic.
What do I have to do?
Every family will receive a copy of A Cricket in Times square along with a reading schedule. Every night, parents are asked to read the scheduled chapter(s) to their children. Each day in school, children will be immersed in common vocabulary, daily trivia, and cross curricular thinking and activities surrounding the events and themes within the book.
Each night, a question will be posted on the blog link above. Students, parents, and staff members are invited to respond to each night's blog post. Please also check out the Fun Links and Vocabulary tabs above.
Please note: All blog posts will be approved by the moderator, Mrs. Walker. If you only want to leave your first name, or only your initials, that is completely fine. Please make sure you have parental permission before posting!
